Fracture
Description...
A fracture is a break in one or more bones in the wrist or hand. The wrist contains eight small bones and two larger bones that make up the forearm. A fracture may occur when enough force is applied to the wrist, such as in a fall. The most commonly fractured bone in the lower arm is the radius. When the radius is fractured, the pain is felt in the joint where the wrist bends, and it is likely that the wrist will appear out of position. If a fracture of one or more of the smaller bones occurs, it is less likely that the wrist will appear deformed.
The symptoms of a wrist fracture are similar to those of a sprain; however, with a fracture, the injured area will be tender to the touch.
Treatment...
If you believe you have a wrist fracture, contact your physician immediately. Diagnosis of a wrist fracture is accomplished through x-rays. Severe cases may require surgery.
• Wear a splint or a cast.
• Once you have consulted a physician, remember the acronym R.I.C.E.: rest, ice, compression wrap, elevate.
• Ice the wrist to reduce swelling using a 20-30 minutes on/20-30 minutes off cycle.
• Elevate the wrist above heart level to reduce swelling.
• After the cast is removed, wear an iGO Wrist Support, an iGO Wrist Stabilizer, an iGO Wrist Wraparound or another compression wrap to help immobilize the wrist to help it heal and to protect against re-injury.
At-Home Exercises...
Due to the nature of bone fractures, it is not recommended to perform exercises until the fractured bone is healed.
