Osteoarthritis
Description...
Also known as cervical spondylosis, cervical osteoarthritis is the deterioration of the vertebrae and discs in the neck, the cervical portion of the spine, through aging. Swollen neck joints can press or pinch nerve roots of the spinal cord, resulting in a "pins and needles" sensation and sometimes leading to pain in the limbs.
Cervical osteoarthritis usually appears in men and women past the age of forty, and it progresses with age. It can lead to episodes of stiffness and neck pain.
Treatment...
There is no cure for arthritis, but there are ways to minimize its effect on your life. If you are experiencing this pain for the first time or if it is becoming severe, see your doctor.
• Rest when pain is severe.
• Non-steroid, anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin can help reduce swelling and relieve pain.
• Wear a soft neck collar, such as the iGO Cervical Collar, to provide rest and healing.
• Neck exercises can strengthen the neck and protect against stiffness.
• Heat or ice can help alleviate pain.
At-Home Exercises...
Chin Tilt:
Look straight ahead and pull your chin straight back. You should feel this stretch in your neck. Hold for a couple of seconds and then release. Repeat eight times.
Head Tilt:
Sit tall in a chair and slowly twist your head to look to the right, then return to center, and then twist your head to look to the left. Return to the neutral position and lower your left ear to your left shoulder, then back to center. Repeat with your right side. Try to keep your head or chin from jutting out.
