Elbow Fracture
Description...
An elbow fracture is a break in one or more of the three bones that make up the elbow joint. The humerus is the bone in the upper arm that runs from shoulder to elbow, and the radius and ulna are the two bones in the forearm that run from elbow to wrist. It is likely with a fractured elbow that swelling will develop directly below or above the elbow.
Treatment...
If you believe you have fractured your elbow, contact your physician immediately. Diagnosis of an elbow fracture is accomplished through x-rays. Severe cases may require surgery.
• Once you have consulted a physician, remember the acronym R.I.C.E.: rest, ice, compression wrap, elevate.
• Ice the elbow to reduce swelling using a 20-30 minutes on/20-30 minutes off cycle.
• Elevate the elbow above heart level to reduce swelling.
• Wear the iGO Elbow Wraparound to help immobilize the elbow, allowing it to heal and protecting against injury.
• Your physician may prescribe elbow therapy exercises to recover flexibility, strength and function.
At-Home Exercises...
Due to the nature of bone fractures, it is not recommended to perform exercises until the fractured bone is healed.
